Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o recently called out his former club, Sampdoria, over a contract dispute.

Running out of patience

Samuel Eto’o had a 6-month spell at Italian club Sampdoria prior to transferring to Antalyaspor in Turkey on a three-year deal. Almost a year after his departure, the superstar voiced his frustration against Sampdoria for not honoring their contract with him. The club supposedly owes him €400 000. In addition, Eto’o claims that when he joined Sampdoria, a clause in his contract guaranteed that the Italian club would sign Fabrice Olinga, a product of the 35-year-old striker’s youth academy. Eto’o had supposedly given up money that he was owed when signing from Everton so that the Serie A club could sign his protege. Eto’o is now running out of patience and is threatening to sue his former team:

“I’ve always tried to be nice throughout my career,” he told Football Italia.”I think gallantry is priceless, and when there’s something to be said you must say it. I’ve always struggled against these situations in my career, and I don’t want this to drag on. I only ask Ferrero, who I and my entourage put a lot of faith in, to do what’s right. I hope that all the messages I’ve received from the president are backed up by concrete facts. I have always believed in the president, and I still do. I heard from him a week ago, he sent me a beautiful picture of the two of us together. Then I sent him a strong message, but that will stay between us. I want to resolve this situation, above all for a great team like Sampdoria. I hope this kind of thing never happens again in football.”

Will they reach an agreement?

Sampdoria responded in a statement:

“1.) The football experience of a great footballer like Eto’o in a prestigious club like Sampdoria was a mutual source of pride. The relationship was resolved consensually at the end of the 2014-15 by Eto’o’s decision, and the club honoured his decision precisely out of respect and esteem for the champion. On that occasion the paperwork resolving the relationship was signed, showing that neither party had demands on the other, and that no business is pending.

2.) With regards to the footballer Fabrice Olinga, the club always acted in line with national and international agreements and regulations. The failure to sign the player depended on a variety of factors, primarily the inability to find a financial agreement, and also the fact that Olinga did not have a status as an Italian national.”

Olinga is currently playing for Belgian club Royal Mouscron-Peruwelz on loan from Malaga.
