Didier Drogba’s charitable organization along with the socially conscious YouTuber Louis Star and the chocolate confectioner Nestlé recorded a video clip of the two personalities visiting a farming town in Côte d’Ivoire, world’s largest cocoa-producing countries.

A big surprise

The former captain of Côte d’Ivoire’s national football team and UNDP goodwill ambassador surprised a few pupils in the middle of a class. Drogba interrupted the class and introduced a special ball to the children. The ball in question includes a battery that charges when kicked around. You can also attach a fixture to it that will power an LED light. Children can charge the ball while playing with it, and then attach a light to it in order to do their homework in the evenings. After his presentation, Drogba invited the kids to a short football break.

Didier Drogba’s foundation partnered with Nestlé to build a school in his home region of Gagnoa in Côte d’Ivoire. Here’s what he said about the collaboration:

“I am very proud of the partnership my foundation has with Nestlé,” Drogba stated. “It will help continue to make a difference to the education and lives of children in the Côte d’Ivoire.”

Building a sustainable industry

The video was recorded as a part of The Nestlé Cocoa Plan, a campaign that aims to improve the lives of cocoa farmers and the quality of their products. The company has already built 40 schools in the country in order to improve the infrastructure available to local farmers and their families and help prevent child labor. This initiative is part of an effort from the large chocolate confectioners to engage in sustainable practices and to better serve small-scale farmers who are at the bottom of the supply chain.

“Nestlé is proud that KITKAT is the first global confectionery brand to be sourced from 100% sustainable cocoa,” said Sandra Martinez, Head of Confectionery for Nestlé. “At Nestlé, it’s been critically important that we are part of establishing a system that takes care of the people and the environment that makes our brands possible. Social responsibility is crucial to the farming communities in the Côte d’Ivoire, and also to the quality of our product.”
